The Kastov 762 is an all-around beast of an Assault Rifle in Modern Warfare 2, dealing high damage with fast bullet velocity.

Even with no attachments the Kastov 762 feels fantastic, and it only gets better once you equip a barrel or muzzle. While the Kastov-74u just edges it out, it’s almost impossible to go wrong with this classic Call of Duty weapon.

4. Kastov-74u

The Kastov-74u is the ideal hybrid of an Assault Rifle and an SMG.

Modern Warfare 2’s Kastov-74u continues to take the community by storm, long being one of the strongest close-range weapons in the game.

The Kastov-74u is very much a close-range Assault Rifle, acting more like a heavy SMG than a traditional AR, boasting a monstrously fast TTK. While you should use it more like an SMG, it can still shred enemies from range with the right attachments.

3. M4

The M4 is a Call of Duty classic.

Although the classic M4 doesn’t excel in any particular category, its jack-of-all-trades nature puts it in the top five best Modern Warfare 2 Assault Rifles.

The first Assault Rifle you’ll unlock, the M4 will be able to carry you all the way into the later levels and you’ll never feel at a disadvantage. The M4 basically has everything you want from an Assault Rifle, you’ll just find a couple of the other choices stronger in certain situations.

The Chimera arrived all the way back in Modern Warfare 2 Season 1 and it’s been a top choice in close-range multiplayer maps ever since.

Boasting a fast fire rate and rapid time to kill, the Chimera is the perfect weapon if you’re taking close-range gunfights. It might not kill quite as fast as the Kastov-74u at close range but it’s much more versatile, giving it the edge.

1. TAQ-56 – Best Assault Rifle in Modern Warfare 2

Modern Warfare 2’s best Assault Rifle is the TAQ-56.

The SCAR is CoD royalty at this point, so it’s no surprise that the Modern Warfare 2 iteration, the TAQ-56, is the best Assault Rifle in the game. Its impressive damage range, almost non-existent recoil, and clean iron sights make it an absolute monster on almost any MW2 map.

Its popularity has also rolled over into Ranked Play, with the TAQ-56 becoming the go-to AR among the very best players. Pound for pound, the SCAR is one of the strongest weapons in Season 3 Reloaded.
